Appearance VS Reality Brianna Valcourt
The appearance versus the reality of a person may differ completely, similar to the famous Marilyn Monroe, or some may say, Norma Jeane. Marilyn Monroe was an American actress, model, and singer, who became a major sex symbol, starring in a number of commercially successful motion pictures during the 1950s and early 1960s. The beautiful Marilyn Monroe differs between social perception and self perception. "Social Perception is who we believe ourselves and others to be and Self Perception is the overall view we have of ourselves, which includes both our self-concept and self-esteem" (Foundations of Communication 28). The promotion through media images plays a major role in the promotion of Marilyn, but not quite the promotion of Norma Jeane. Marilyn was a character that Norma Jeane displayed for the public. Marilyn was a veil that Norma wore in public. Every time Norma did a photo shoot as an American actress, model, and singer, she had a full body mirror next to the photographer. This was so she was able to view the way she appears to others eyes. It was to assure she was perceived how she intended. Norma claims she can always find Marilyn in the mirror. The social appearance that she approved of in the mirror was the famous Marilyn Monroe. In Norma's eyes, Marilyn was only in the mirror and pictures. Norma was just like everyone else.
There was a conflict between this woman's appearance and reality because she did not want to walk around as Marilyn Monroe, she only enjoyed partially living 'The Monroe' lifestyle. Marilyn put great effort into blurring the line between her public and private life. "The whole world seemed sort of closed to me...(I felt) on the outside of everything, and all I could do was to dream up any kind of pretend-game" (Modern American Poetry). Appearing as Marilyn made her feel wonderful, but only at certain times. She appeared as Marilyn to sometimes have an escape from her closed and concealed personality that came with Norma Jeane. She mostly projected 'The Monroe' confidence and beauty through modeling, acting and singing. In public this woman remains Norma Jeane. Although, if people recognize her, they would most likely know her as Marilyn. She portrays her 'Monroe' appearance as the opposite to her 'Jeane' reality. "Marilyn Monroe called Jackie Kennedy at the White House and confessed she was having an affair with her husband, to which the First Lady responded 'that's great... I'll move out and you'll have all the problems,' according to an explosive new book. In 'These Few Precious Days: The Final Year of Jack with Jackie,' author Christopher Andersen claims Jackie 'knew everything' about Jack's cheating and turned a blind eye, but his relationship with Marilyn 'seemed to bother her the most.' And she was right to fear the bombshell actress, because Marilyn's sights were firmly set on becoming the President's second wife." (Daily Mail). This affair that Marilyn had supports her change in behavior, switching between Marilyn and Norma. Marilyn does avoid her public life as for she concluded. She continued with her life as normal Norma Jeane, as it would be less stressful. Marilyn was only an image as a sex goddess and a beautiful dumb blonde that the world easily became fascinated with.
